Although St Andrew’s Church is right in the heart of Dundee city centre, it is surrounded by some beautiful gardens. Visitors to the church can walk up through the formal gardens at the front and these gardens make the perfect backdrop for wedding photographs.
To the left of the church, through the large black gates lie the Wyvern and Secret gardens. These were the result of some major rejuvenation work started in 2011 to what was then a weed-filled derelict site. There is a small biblical garden to the left of the gates, filled with plants such as Solomon’s seal, angel’s fishing rods, honesty, Lenten roses etc. The rest of the garden is planted with a mixture of perennials, herbs and fragrant shrubs, giving it a multi-colour interest throughout the whole year. At the very end of the Wyvern garden is the Secret Garden which is a specially designed outdoor play area for the youngest users of the church and St Andrew’s Project.
Along with the areas mentioned above there are other various ‘mini-gardens’ around the church and its grounds, all of which require maintenance. This is carried out by a small and dedicated group of volunteers. They meet on a Tuesday morning (10am), during the growing season, and would welcome any new recruits. No previous gardening experience is necessary, but those with expertise and in-depth knowledge of plant care would also be a great asset to the group.
